Advantages: It is a thin book
Disadvantages: It is boringly boring
Second Fiddle is about a lady named Laura who falls in love with a much younger man, Claud. Laura usually does not allow herself to become emotionally involved in relationships and normally has occasional flings. Claud is a budding young author who seems to have had a negative childhood in that his father had been a drunk who occasionally took out his temper on his wife in a physical sense. He is insecure in his writing abilities and depends on Laura's praise to keep him going. The book is set in some village somewhere but who knows where and who cares. There are a lot of minor characters involved in this book, so many that it becomes easy to lose track of who was who, particularly as none of them, including the main characters, actually 'grab' you. Laura's mother and her mothers brother live together and there are rumours that Laura's father is in fact the mothers brother. This part could have made the story interesting but it is not expanded on in anyway and this subplot fizzles into nothing, in exactly the same way that the rest of the book does. You don't feel sympathy, like, dislike, in fact anything towards anyone, so you find yourself simply reading the book because you want to finish it rather than because you want to find out what happens to anyone. You find yourself not even bothering to analyse the characters because they are not worth it. The book is bland, uninteresting and I wish I had just put it down after the first page. Ah, well, you live and learn. I will not be reading any more of Mary Wesleys books.

- 14/05/02 I know it's a hard thing to learn, but life is too short to keep reading a book you're not interested in up to the end. In the bin or to the bazaar with it! Cheers, Malu |

- 21/02/02 I've read all of mary Wesley's books and believe me, there are others much better than this one. Try The Camomile Lawn or Harnessing Peacocks, before dismissing her altogether! |
