Advantages: Simple counting book for pre - school children .

Disadvantages: Pop - ups are a little fragile with enthusiastic little hands!

This book is one of a series of books by Jo Lodge, aimed a pre-school children.

- Content -

On each page the reader is invited to join in with finding and counting the different animals on the pages. It is predominantly an early counting book from 1 to 5. Each page begins with:
'What have you got Mr Croc?'

'One white rabbit.'
'Two sleeping kittens'

And so on until we get to five dancing butterflies, followed by Mr Croc with lots of 'snapping teeth!'

The content is ideal for encouraging children to identify the different animals and count them. On each page both the digit and the written word for numbers one to five are shown so good educational content whilst at the same time young children are having fun without realising they are learning at the same time!

-Style, Format and Illustrations -

The book has thicker than usual pages but not quite as sturdy as a board book. The pages are very brightly coloured with pink, blue, yellow, purple and red backgrounds.

It is a pop-up book with great 3D features on each double page as well as one tab to pull to reveal a hidden animal.
There are six double page spreads across most of which Mr Croc spreads himself displaying various animals.

Simple, bold illustrations and limited repetitive text which is great for young children to commit to memory and join in with, e.g. 'What have you got Mr Croc?'

- Overall -

A very simple but effective book aimed at young children. It really does appeal to them and will not disappoint.

The only negative is that the pop-ups can be quite fragile if mishandled. So far, I've only had the head of Mr Croc's teeth damaged on the last page which isn't too bad after a couple of years in regular use with enthusiastic 3 - 4 year olds!!

- Price -
ISBN: 978-0-340-93116-5, RRP is £6.99 but it's worth looking round, for example on amazon or even a trip to the library.

- Other books by Jo Lodge -

~ Knock! Knock! Mr Croc
~ Just Like Mr Croc!

A great book for pre-school children to join in with.
