“When Broken Glass Floats” by Chanrithy Him is an autobiographical account of growing up in Cambodia in the Khmer Rouge and for obvious reasons, contains many similarities to the book “First they Killed my Father: A Daughter of Cambodia Remembers” by Loung Ung. These two unrelated women born just five years apart; Chanrithy being the elder, born in 1965. In fact, it was Loung’s book which both shocked and disturbed me in the account of brutalities that were experienced by innocent people - that inspired me to want to read further about the history and regime of the country.
