Newest Review: ... for a number of years and adore crime fiction, so this series, about two policemen based on Shanghai, ticks a lot of boxes ... more  ... for me. Unfortunately, there are a number of flaws, which make it difficult to fully recommend this book.
Chen Cao is a published poet, who was assigned to the police service after he completed University. He is a leading light in his department, having caught the attention of his superiors because of his skills at the job. I find him a little annoying - sometimes he is too clever for his own good and appears patronising. The author of a particularly sensitive book about the Cultural Revolution is found murdered in her tiny flat. Inspector Chen Cao is on leave, having agreed to complete a big translation job to boost his income, so the case is taken over by Sergeant Yu Guangming. The case seems relatively simple; it must have been committed by someone that lived in hte same building as the dead author. However, the suspects all seem to have valid alibis. The situation is further complicated by Yu's superiors, who are anxious to show that the nyrder was not committed for political reasons.
