Where is Spot? - By Eric Hill

I absolutely adored Spot books when I was younger and couldn't wait to pick up some for Jack as it seems he is becoming a right little book worm! Luckily a colleague of mine who has a couple of older children was passing on some books to me and in amongst the piles she gave was a couple of Spot books. Of course I couldn't wait to read them myself let alone get home and share the experience with Jack.

The book itself is a board book so the pages are nice and thick and easy for small fingers to turn the pages over to the next one. This book is a lift the flap book so not only is it great fun but it makes the child feel like he is playing a part in the book if it is being read to them. The flaps are not as strong as the thick pages but they seem fairly tough none the less.

The main story of the book is that Spots mum is trying to find Spot somewhere over the house. She looks in lots of different places but just can't seem to find him. Although she does come across some rather strange animals in some rather strange places. On lifting one flap that covers the grandfather clock Spot's mum finds a snake, but no Spot. She lifts the lid of the piano to find a hippo, but no spot. The search continues through out the house and comes across lots of different animals until eventually she finds Spot hiding in a basket!

The story is pretty simple but that is really all you want for a children's book that is aimed at very small children. The pictures are all bright and interesting and you can instantly tell what kind of animal is hiding in the various different places. Although this book is now a good few years old, the pictures do not seem at all dated and neither does the story itself.

Jack really does love this book as he is able to turn the pages and lift up the flaps all by himself. I have to be careful though because with the flaps being fairly thin and rather flimsy he finds great delight in trying to rip the flap off from the page.

The RRP on the back of this board book is £3.99pence but I have seen these books selling for a lot cheaper than this price and you can pick up a real bargain on eBay and Amazon if you keep your eyes peeled. I think even for the RRP I would be very happy with this purchase. The Spot books are true classics and books that I myself hold dear. I hope one day that Jack will see these books in the same light.

There are a few other books that are in this Spot Series and they are:
Spot's first walk
Spot goes to the farm
Spot's noisy toy box
Spot goes to the circus
Spot's busy week
Spot's touch and feel day
Spot visits his grandparents

I would highly recommend this book and any other book from the Spot series to any parent for their youngster. They are well worth every penny paid (or not in my case). They are simple to follow with good illustrations. The writing is big and bold and are perfect learning aids. The kids are able to get involved with lifting the flaps and in my personal opinion it is great fun all round.

Thanks for taking the time to read
