Advantages: Great book for kids

Disadvantages: None

Where's Spot is one of the books written by Eric Hill and featuring the character that he created back in 1980: Spot the puppy. This particular book was a favourite of mine when I was younger, as it features Spot as well some of his friends. Hill's creation has been a favourite for children and adults alike as it provides entertainment and interaction at the same time as being educational as well.

This story sees Spot's mum, Sally, looking for him because his dinner is ready, so she goes around the house looking for him. She checks all the likely places, but finds his friends there instead, until finally she finds him in the basket, and tells him his dinner's ready.

What is good about this story for the children is that it is a guessing game, much like the other Spot books. Each page has a flap which is concealing the area of the house that Sally is looking for Spot in. It is nice to let the child pull the flap back to see whether Spot is in there or not. From an educational stance, kids get to learn placement words, such as inside and under, and learn how to use them. This is helped by the appearance of Spot's friends, the crocodile, monkey and hippo, etc, who are where Sally is looking until the end, when she finds Spot.

Where's Spot? is a very good book. The illustrations are soft and very appealing for kids. I must admit that now my 4 year old is a bit older than when we first got the book, he has lost a little interest in it somewhat, although every now and then he'll ask for it to be read to him at bedtime.

Where's Spot? is available from amazon.co.uk from £2.02, although it usually retails at a lot more. It is available in paperback, hardback and board book. Just a final word of warning: the flaps aren't extremely secure so as to withstand a child attempting to rip them out, so if this does happen, don't be surprised. It's too tempting for them!! Recommended - it's a lovely book

Summary: Great book for kids
