Advantages: Fun, great for Top Gear Fans, Lots to keep people entertained
Disadvantages: Not suitable for younger children
This book is a Top Gear book based on the "Where's Wally?" series of books. For those of you who don't know what these are they were a series of children's books where you had to find the character Wally hidden in the picture on each set of pages. For those of you who don't watch Top Gear, The Stig is the mysterious white suited racing driver
I have to point out here that the "Where's Stig?" book is not a children's book although it might look like that from the cover. It contains humour typical of that of Top Gear and therefore not suitable for young children although it might appeal to teenagers who like the programme. Some adults may also be offended by the pictures of road kill and seals, my advice would be if you don't like the humour in Top Gear then don't buy the book.
So you might wonder why I was reading this book, well my husband is a huge Top Gear fan both of the programme and the magazine, in our house we have every edition of the magazine since it was published!! This book found its way on to his birthday list and he was delighted when my family bought it for him.
The book is an A4 sized hardback book and looks much like a children's annual book. There are 12 different scenes in the book, each spanning a set of double pages. The scenes are mainly of different trips that the Top Gear presenters have been on and include things like The Deep South, Botswana, The North Pole and Tokyo. There is also one of the studio and an outer space one.
At the front of the book there is a page which pictures the 21 different things you have to find of each scene. As well as finding Stig you also have to find each of the other presenters, Top Gear Dog, a tin of spam, Stig Sarnie, a No Caravan sign and various other objects. Having more than just the Stig to look for makes the books appeal last a bit longer. At the end of the book there is a further checklist of more things you need to find.
The book is great fun and the attention to detail in the scenes is great. In the Botswana scene there is even "comb-over man", if you are a fan of the series you will remember the presenters looking at him through their binoculars!
This is a fun book which will really appeal to Top Gear fans. It's a great idea for a Christmas present and will keep people occupied for ages on Christmas Day and beyond. It's a book you can dip in and out of. You can just spend a short while looking for the Stig in each scene or you can go and spend much more time looking for all the objects on the list or go through the longer checklist at the back. Even if you are not really a big Top Gear fan you can still enjoy the challenge of looking for things, you can even look at the book with someone else and have a challenge to find the Stig first.
The book is currently on sale for £4.46 from Amazon although its RRP is £8.99. It's a great book and will give hours of entertainment and fun and is recommended.
Summary: A Top Gear Book in the style of the Wheres Wally series

- 10/11/09 I've rather avoided this as I think the whole Stig thing is well past its sell-by date now, but from what you say it sounds a bit more varied than I thought. Handy review. |
