This is a wonderful story of love and politics in 19th century India. Now don't start yawning and say it's been done before. This is different. This is a true story. In fact, had it been written as a novel I would be criticising it because of incompleteness, an unsatisfactory ending and some lack of definition in the characterisation. But this is real life with all its inconsistencies and loose ends. The setting is Hyderabad in the late 1790s, early 1800s. James Kirkpatrick is appointed British Resident (ambassador) to represent the East India Company at the court of Nazim Ali Khan.
