White Oleander - Janet Fitch ... White Oleander, has a mother who is as sharp as a new knife. An uncompromising poet, Ingrid despises weakness and self- pity, telling her daughter that they are descendants of Vikings, savages who fought fiercely to survive. And when one of Ingrid's boyfriends abandons her, she illustrates her point, killing the man with the poison of oleander flowers. This leads to a life-sentence in prison, leaving Astrid to teach herself the art of survival in a string of Los Angeles foster homes.

This flower serves as a metaphor for so many things in this story - for love, for childhood, for parenthood, but most of all for Ingrid - a scandinavian blonde with an innate sense of poetry, but a loose grip on reality. This haunting book is the story of Astrid - Ingrid's daughter. As the book opens on a parched LA landscape, we learn about how much Astrid loves her crazy, artistic mother. She follows her everywhere, ...

Well written A bit too one-sided?

Certainly a different approach to teenage fiction Just too bland and drear to excite...

Brill 10 quid if you buy it

Great read! Plus you know there is more fun to come in the rest of the novels in the series. You might want to take the day off work and the phone off the hook to finish reading it.

Beautifully written, short and satisfying. Yet another story about a wartime childhood.

Quality of prose, Maniuplation of themes, Atmosphere Failure to engage with one of the characters
