Advantages: writen by one of the most well known fantsy writers
Disadvantages: can seem a slow starter to some
Although a slow starter after the first chapter, the story is worth waiting for and worth all the flash backs which do actually contain a sub plot that has everything to do with the ending. All though I did find the end a little less exhilarating than the rest of the battles in the book, it was still none the less gripping.
I really must have a wicked sense of humour as I was in howls of laughter at certain parts.... especially at the parts where young lands get embarrassed by their excitement... and there are thousands of men out there who I have no doubts have been in that position!!!!!!!!!!!
There are a few sad parts which made me cry ( I was sick and vunerable... sue me)
One thing is clear, the few mentions of the female form were obviously slaved over, as it they were, although very romantic and gentlemanly, certaily a male point of view of admiring the body.
I wouldn't suggest this book to say under 16's, mainly because of the hand to hand combat and bloody sword battles, but also because of the romantic yet subtle mentions of sex, some of which could be construed as gratuitous rather than in a loving relationship.
All in all though, a great book, so looks like I'm going to the book shop to get the next one (Swords of Night and Day) and/or possibly any of the others by the same writer.
Summary: Into the mind of Skillgannon the Damned

- 09/05/07 You could maybe add a bit more general what it's about, genre, etc. I've read a fair bit of David Gemmell, but I didn't really get that 'overall' picture. |
