Advantages: Funny stories
Disadvantages: Not a Biography
I was looking forward to reading this book as I like listening to Jonathan Ross on the radio ever Saturday as he has me and my hubby in tears with laughter at times. When I started this book I found I was very disappointed. I was expecting this to be a biography of his life but instead he starts the book by telling us that this is certainly not his biography and is instead a book he has written telling us about crazy situations he has found himself in and why he sometimes does the silly thing he does. I did persevere with the book and was pleasantly surprised as I found it very good.
The book is split into 14 chapters and each of them has a very witty title and only gives away a small bit about what hen might be going to tell us about next. Some of the things which he does tell us about include the time he was starting out in his career and found himself filming a documentary on Mexican wrestling movies around 1989. He was stupid enough to eat some dodgy food and ended up with the worst runs and sickness of his life, he used some tablets which were in his emergency first aid kit which a friend had made up for him and he ended up taking the date rape drug and being only semi-conscious for the following few days. This story he refers to as the time he date raped himself.
As we move through the book he does talk quite a lot about the early stages of his career and how he tried out different fashions and even ended up wearing a turban which resulted in his going to his daughter school concert drunk and wearing this turban. Also he mentions a lot about how he would always endeavour to wear different and fun clothes and not comply with the boring suit everyone else seemed to be wearing at the time.
There is a chapter which he starts by asking any of his family to skip and move onto the next and also anyone who may be a bit funny about hearing about sex. As you can gather from the previous bit this is where he tells us about when he was discovering masturbation and sex. He tells us the truly awful ordeal he suffered when he found himself home alone and the vacuum cleaner out so he experimented with it. I will spare all you men the details but you can imagine what he did and how painful it must have been. Jonathan is very open throughout the book about how much he loves sex and how it is something he is always thinking about. He tells us how grateful he is to his wife for always being willing to let him have his little fix with her and never moaning abut how often this happens. I really would not have minded at all if he left these details out as I personally think it was just a bit too far and too much detail.
We do learn from his stories that he is happily married with 3 children and 7 dogs, all of which he loves immensely and has all the time in the world for them and he does actually get a bit soppy when he talks about how he could not imagine his life without his beloved wife and children. He also tells us a good few tales of what his dogs have done.
At the end of the book he does get a little deeper and give us his thoughts on faith and religion and how he did think about what faith he would like to be and how if he could he would set up his own which included god being a comic book hero.
This book has been written extremely well and Jonathan has been very open and honest throughout, at times maybe a bit too honest. I like the way he goes from talking about something which has recently happened to him and then suddenly remembering something from his childhood which he then strays off and tells us about., This is not as difficult to follow as it may seem as he always comes back to the first point, eventually!
Between the chapters there are some fun black and white pictures of Jonathan, in all of these he is posing and they are quite fun. I think that these would have been out of place if this had been a biography but as it isn't then they fit really well.
The book does contain quite a lot of swearing and sex references so I would not say that this book is suitable for all, so be warned if you intend on reading this that there is a lot of both. This is a very funny book and at times when I was reading it in bed my hubby did moan at me for giggling and making the bed shake!
The copy of the book which I have is a hard back edition which has been published by Bantam Press. There is a retail price of £18.99 on the book but this can be picked up in Tesco for £10 at the moment. I was fortunate as I bought it a few weeks ago when it first came out and got it for the offer price of £8.
I do recommend this book for all fans of Jonathan Ross or anyone who wants to read an extremely funny book..
Summary: Ross talks about some very funny moments in his life
