Advantages: Gripping master-class story telling

Disadvantages: A little bit dated and no chapters

Unlike many of the books written by Wilbur Smith, this story is a one-off affair. As you would expect from this author, this is a really gripping adventure story. However, it also has many of the elements of a political thriller and despite the fact that it is a little dated, having been written about thirty years ago, it is a cracking read.

The story starts with the hijacking of a passenger jet off the east coast of Africa. However, this is no mere simple terrorist action but just the start of a devious and terrifying plot. However, the terrorists have underestimated General Peter Stride, the commander of Thor Command, an elite anti-terrorist organisation. Whilst the world leaders dither, General Stride decides to act decisively but even he can't begin to guess where his actions will lead him as a worldwide conspiracy is uncovered.

The story has so many twists and turns and is full of surprises and suspense. The fact that the book has no formal chapters just makes it even harder for you to find somewhere easy to stop and put down the book for a while. Instead you are just driven to continue to turn the pages to discover just what will happen next.

Wilbur Smith is a very talented story-teller and there is no lazy writing in his novels. Everything is well-researched, well-written and the whole story fits together with no discrepancies or unexplained inconsistencies. You can therefore totally immerse yourself into the novel, believe that it could just possibly be true and enjoy the read.
