'A Wild Sheep Chase' is probably one of the first books I'd recommend anyone to read who wants to get into Murakami. Firstly it's very easy to follow with it's natural storytelling format, and it's just a good and weird (and short) read. It's brilliant; and even though you should never judge a book by a cover, this is the third book by Murakami that even has great artwork too; great to show off to passengers infront of you on a train journey - atleast the Harvill/Panther releases. This is my favourite of Haruki Murakami's works that I have read to date. Sections of it read like comedy, and others read like a surreal work of detective fiction. The book's narrator is a young man who inexplicably finds himself forced to chase through the countryside of Japan in search of a sheep with a star on its back. It all starts when he uses a photograph of a landscape in an obscure part of the country, taken by an old friend of his, in a life insurance company's PR bulletin. An influential politician spots the photograph, and insists that the narrator destroy the printed bulletins, find where the photograph was taken, and track ...
