This is one of my favourite Thomas Hardy short storys that I studied for my GCSE coursework. I was dubious to read this at first as I knew Thomas Hardy was well known for padding his storys out. [Which I later discovered was due to the fact that like Charles Dickens his storys were published chapter by chapter in a newspaper. Hardy had to write a lot so that he would get paid!] I then later discovered that Thomas Hardy wrote portraying women as the heroine or the victim in the stories and men the villain.
