Woman in White - Wilkie Collins ... impossible to put down. The Woman in White famously opens with Walter Hartright's eerie encounter on a moonlit London road. Engaged as a drawing master to the beautiful Laura Fairlie, Walter is drawn into the sinister intrigues of Sir Percival Glyde and his 'charming' friend Count Fosco, who has a taste for white mice, vanilla bonbons and poison. Pursuing questions of identity and insanity along the paths and corridors of English country houses and the madhouse, The Woman in White is the first and most influential of the Victorian genre that combined Gothic horror with psychological realism.

... guessing until the very end. The best thing about this book is the character Count Fosco he is a hilarious villian who is very creepy and unsettling. I took this book on holiday and loved reading it by the sea, the only downside is that it is a tad long and can be quite heavy to carry about. Interesting fact - This book was first printed in Dickens' periodical 'All the Year Round' and was published in monthly installments. If you enjoy Victorian literature that transports you away - this novel is for you!...more

The Woman in White by Wilkie Collins The ghostly sounding title and the spooky looking oil painting on the cover of my edition of "The Woman in White" attracted me to this book initially, and the blurb on the back convinced me to give it a go, despite a heavy looking 624 pages and the fact that I'd never read any of Wilkie Collins's other offerings. The oil painting on my book depicts a couple of shady figures, one dressed solely in black, the other in white, lurking suspiciously outside a dingy looking structure; the blurb tells me I'm about to plunge myself into a "splendid thriller" which "skilfully exploits Victorian ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Woman in White - Wilkie Collins: White-Knuckle Reading! (800 words)

Rating:

This novel, written in the 1860s, is one of many pieces of ‘sensation’ fiction which were very popular with Victorian readers at the time. It relies on cliff-hangers and puzzling twists of plot to turn what at first appears quite a simple problem, but proves to be a lot more complicated. The story is structured in a series of narratives, the overall narrative being that of the novel’s protagonist, Walter Hartright. Hartright, a painter, receives a job at Limmeridge House to assist two cousins in their painting skills. On the way to his placement, Walter encounters a ghostly woman, all alone and dressed in white, and in considerable distress. ...  Read the complete review
