A tendentious book, very definitely, but it avoids the usual fault of feminist polemic, that is, consisting of dubious fact piled on dubious anecdote, by being the sort of book in which this isn't a fault. I relished the sarcastic hostility toward Christianity, thought a lot of the linguistic analysis was on the Moses-came-from-Middlesbrough-because-both-start-with-"M" level, and didn't like the the faint but definite anti-homo bias: I could easily imagine a Goddess-worshipping, gynocentric society based on the ideas on this book persecuting homosexuals. Or perhaps the homo-hostility was muted out of good taste but founded on the solid fact that homos ... Read the complete review
