When the original Worst Case Scenario Survival handbook was published, it covered emergencies many of which were only the kind experienced by Ray Mears and that ilk. The issue of a "Travel" version or sub-section makes all kind of sense, since most of the scrapes that the Man On The Clapham Omnibus will get into are more likely to occur whilst travelling to, or actually being in , foreign climes. I think someone gave me this book as a stocking filler at a past Christmas (well it certainly wasn't NEXT Christmas), and as such it's lain around in the bed-side table just waiting to come to the top of the pile as a bit of 'loo-time' reading. Any book thus ... Read the complete review

This is truly the Wost-Case Scenario survival handbook, as while providing some useful information, it definitely presumes you are an American! Yes, it's racist jokes and book ops in one go today, folks... But from now on the only offensive stuff is from the makers of the book. What you get is a handy-sized volume with simple, small chapters written by experts on survival, stunt work, explosives, et al. Large print, bullet points, diagrams that pointlessly repeat the words, it looks just like some cheap and nasty airline safety brochure. However it does contain common sense info, and should you need to biff a shark or alligator, you now ... Read the complete review

Ever wondered what you would do if you came face to face with a shark? How about having to survive a hostage taking, or a street fight? Or even how to take a punch and tend to serious injuries. Well unless you are thinking of going to Afghanistan or Plymouth then I imagine you will not have any reason for you to worry, but for the well prepared person the Worst Case Scenario handbook is for you. The Worst Case Scenario series comes packed with advice on what to do in any situation you could possibly encounter. Using Sods law and the fact that anything that can happen will this book will provide you with key skills and a bit of entertainment along the way. ... Read the complete review

This little orange book has been in our bathroom for about a year, I think I have read it from cover to cover at least six times. It is compiled by Joshua Piven and David Borgenicht. Published by Chronicle Books, San Francisco. It is 176 pages long and costs around £7.00 new. (You can probably buy one considerably cheaper from one of the widows of the men who have tried these survival techniques out!) It is the last word in how to survive almost any bizarre life threatening situation. It is one of those books that you can dip into for amazing bits of information. The compilers have, from the safety of their homes in Philadelphia, ... Read the complete review

However, what do you buy for a traveller?? I had never really thought about it to be honest. I considered all the usual, sunglasses, sarong, jewellery, a mag-lite (you never know when you might need one of those!) and then one day whilst quite accidently browsing the books in Waterstones I came across ...
