Advantages: Full of useful information
Disadvantages: None really
Although the title says Writers Handbook 2000 I thought I’d review the new 2001 edition that has just been released. The Writers Handbook 2001 edition follows much the same format as last years book One of the main differences is the addition of a section on how to set up your own website, and also a section on useful websites for writers. Edited by Barry Turner this is a reference book every type of writer should have on their bookshelf. There is useful information for journalists, writers of all genres, screenwriters, broadcasters and publishers. The book includes addresses and contacts for publishers in the UK, Ireland, USA, Europe and the Commonwealth. So if you have that manuscript or short story lying around you will have no problem in finding some suitable place to send it. For the freelance non-fiction writer there is information on National and regional newspapers, and magazines. This information includes payment rates, contact names and requirements. Other sections in the book include News Agencies, Small presses, Poetry magazines and competitions, Theatre producers, useful websites, TV companies, Writers courses and literary competitions and prizes. As you can see the list is pretty comprehensive, and if that isn’t enough each section is preceded by an introduction containing tips and information about that particular section. The section on screenwriting for instance is written by Lynda La Plante, and is an interesting read in it’s own right. If you are a writer or involved in the media then this book is a must have. At only £12.99 for around 700 pages packed full of information this is well worth the money.
