Wycliffe and How to Kill A Cat - W.J. Burley ... could almost believe she was asleep - that is, until he saw her face. She had been strangled, and someone had brutally smashed her face - but after death, not before...She lay in a seedy hotel room down by the docks, but her luggage, her clothes and her make-up all suggested she had more class than her surroundings. Superintendent Wycliffe was officially on holiday, but the case fascinated him. Who was the girl? Why was she lying naked in a shabby hotel room. What was she doing with a thousand pounds hidden underneath some clothing. And, above all, why had someone mutilated her after she was dead? As Wycliffe begins to investigate, he finds there are too many suspects, too many motives - and too many lies.

Rating:

A young girl is found strangled, with her face bashed in, in a dodgy hotel down by the docks. When Chief Superintendent Wycliffe, who is holidaying in the town where the body is found, first sees her, he is surprised at the quality of her clothes and her apparent good looks - why would such a girl be in such a place? More surprises are to be discovered; despite the girl's youth, she is married to a dried-up, middle-aged man. Good pace, thrilling story Bad guys too cartoonish, unbelieveable?

At times quite a light read-at other times begins to drag. Quite funny in places though Goes on a bit too long and mostly takes the mick out of typical British weather and builders

Well written and told Detective Story Quite slow paced

good battle half very sketchy buildup and intro half

Cracking crime yarns Not a lot!
