Advantages: Simple, non-lecturing advice.

Disadvantages: None.

Before my son was born, I had had NO experience of babies whatsoever! So, I shopped around for a book relating to babycare, & plumped for this one. Even though I haven't read any other babycare books, I seriously doubt they come close to the brilliance of this one....

The book covers the first 6 months of babys life. The format is pleasingly simple, working through set topics week by week. Topics covered include sleeping, feeding, bathing, development, nappies etc. So, for example, feeding covers the amount of milk required each day, split into how many feeds etc (covering both breast & bottle feeding); nappies covers how many are normal in a day/what colour poo (!) is normal etc. In addition to baby's care, there is a section on mum, & how she should be feeling physically & mentally as time goes along (this covers 'normal' & caesarian births). Also included are safety tips & health tips dotted here & there. The book ends with a section on weaning & a very helpful week-by-week guide which is simple & easy to follow.

The book is amazingly accurate. Obviously everything is based on an 'average' baby, but my sons development/requiremts are almost spot-on with the timeframe in the book.

Obviously us parents don't get much time for reading, but that's the great thing with this book - you don't need much time. Each week is only a few pages long & it's easier to read the book as you go along a week in advance.

The advice is clearly written, in a non-patronising way. Advice on such as routines is clearly suggested, but not in a way that feels too forceful or regimented.

The book is available in papaerback from Amazon for £8.44 (correct @ June 2009), RRP £12.99.

Summary: It's just a shame this book only covers the first 6 months....!
