Buying a printer has become a strange ordeal, as the printer cartridges generally cost similar amounts to the actual printers, the turnover of these machines can be overly regular.
I've had my printer for four years and use HP300 printer cartridges to ensure I can print, I am on my third cartridge in four years, so generally they provide fairly good value, although i'm an infrequent printer.
I recently found an offer on Tesco where the printer cartridges cost £8.50 each, but offered a 30% discount when buying two as well as 750 clubcard points per cartridge, this seemed like a great reason to buy a few more and save cash and clubcard points into the bargain.
The cartridges are well packaged in a small black box with the colour and cartridge number shown clearly, when opened you have to rip a foil bag and then take a piece of tape out of the cartridge, but this is for protection of the item.
Fitting the cartridge is simple, I remove the old one and simply fit the new one in the same way, lowering the front of the cartridge and then rolling the cartridge into the gap, it is simple and reliable, unlike some I use at work which require a degree in engineering and an ability to show items into spaces they really can't fit.
The cartridge works smoothly when put in place, they hold around 4ml of ink (you can buy the xl cartridge for more ink). This lasts me over a year, printing around 4-5 pages of stuff per month, but could be used up fairly quickly for more frequent users. The cartridge includes a decent facility that allows you to continue printing a document even when the cartridge is very low on ink.
Overall these are reliable and fairly reasonably priced (currently £10 on Amazon, or less via Marketplace). They do last for a good amount of time, if looked after and are simple to fit, without causing too much frustration.
While they are still a little pricier than i'd like to pay, there are some good offers around for double packs or other opportunities at the moment, so these are well worth looking at.
They have helped encourage me not to replace my printer each time I need more ink and have never caused me a moment of bother.
