Advantages: Fast, cheap, realiable.

Disadvantages: None so far.

I bought this processor, new motherboard, new video card and windows vista home premium to upgrade my old PC which my son now uses for gaming. I may review the motherboard etc. later.

I researched this processor on the web first, and decided on this particular processor based on comparing prices and performance with what I need, rather than what I might want, and it does all I need. In fact, by writing this review, I am simply adding to the many great reviews out there about this processor, I am yet to read a bad review.

Essentially the Athlon 64 X2 6000+ is simply two cores (processors) at 3GHz with 1MB of L2 cache per core. This is pretty awsome when you consider that the machine I am writing this review on is one processor at 1.8 ghz, very old and plenty fast enough (my 'work' machine).

This means that you are getting a pretty fast processor which, although launched about a year ago now, still runs all known games as far as I am aware. I say this as the main reason for this machine, as I have said is for my son to use as his games machine.

AMD have a pretty comprehensive website where anyone that has a technical mind (I am not 'dim' about this, but also not fascinated) can get info' to their hearts desire, the essential info for anyone with my limited knowledge base listed is below:

Processor AMD AthlonTM 64 X2 Dual-Core
Model Number 6000+
Frequency (MHZ) 3000
L2 Cache Size (KB) 2048
Socket AM2

What does all this mean? Well, for a start, it is as fast as most folks will need, and a lot cheaper than an Intel processor, for the tecchies, apparantly it is easy to overclock (make faster still).

In 'old money' the processing power is not quite as fast as having two, seperate 3ghz processors, but is not far short either. There are many online programmes that anyone can run to check processor speed these days, I find that quite useful when buying games etc. to make sure before buying that they will run.

I recently bought Command and Conquer 3, which, in case anyone does not know, is a very processor hungry game, it runs completely smoothly on all the most intensive settings.

In terms of installation, I got a man in to do this, as I am wanting to make sure I am covered by warranty etc. So I cannot really comment on this suffice to say he told me that it was dead easy, and as it took him 30 minutes, I'd reckon he was telling me the truth.

Cost was pretty cheap, less than £100 (PC World sell these at £119. 27/4/08) by buying direct (my PC guy has his own business), which is very little money for quite a lot of power. In addition the guy who fitted it all up told me that AMD are pretty much the most compatible around right now.

The manual that comes with it is really helpful, and although I am no tecchie, I understood most of it.

The processor seems very happy to multi task, I often have iTunes playing in the background whilst I am preparing a PowerPoint presentation with graphic or charts, and my son will play an online game such as World of Warcraft (notoriously processor hungry) with other programmes running behind that (like he ever turns one programme off before starting another).

In short, I do not expect to upgrade this for at least two years, so it is, in my opinion, pretty cost effective. I have now had the processor for about 4 months, not a single problem, excellent buy.

Updated from an earlier review that I posted on Ciao.

Oh no, not a C&C fan. ;) I always had AMD processors in the past, it's intel all the way now though!
