Advantages: Information on the Latest AMD release.
Disadvantages: None really.
Once again the CPU battle fires up, with AMD announcing the release of there new processor next week. Code named Palomino. The new AMD 4 will be nicely positioned to corner the notebook market also, as the P4 has no plans to release a notebook size CPU untill the first half of 2002. One of the main points with the new AMD Athlon is the power usage, recently AMD Athlons would suck up a staggering 60watts of power, which is alot less than the Pentium4. Reportedly the Athlon 4 is said use a concerdable amount less than its current 60watts. Due to the less power that the Athlon 4 needs it makes it a keen goer for the notebook market. Also to note it will be appearing in notebooks before we see it in Desktops & Servers. So what is AMD Doing? Just countering Intel blow for blow? I really doubt it, where many feel that AMD are copying Intels work even to go down as far as the branding campaigns. I still stand by my guns that AMD is one force to be reckoned with. They are a strong and reliable chip and recently they seem to be one step ahead of Intel. Intel released the P4 way to early, thinking it would give them an edge on rival companys *such as AMD*. All they did was make a show out of themselves. It has been proven by many research groups and reviewers that the new P4 1.5GHz is no faster than a PIII 1GHz. Well it may show it to be faster on stats, but when it comes down to performance there is no noticable signs. Where as AMD bring out the Athlon & the cheaper CPU the Duron. These CPU's have noticable performance differences and rightly so. AMD work hard at making sure the product they are releasing is as strong as it can be made. Which results in alot of happy users. So as you can imagine i am eagerly awaiting the announcement of the AMD Athlon 4, and i have no doubt that it is going to grace my servers & Desktops with its presence.

- 10/05/01 Eek, thanks for this info, do you have any links or magazines I should look at for more info? I ordered an Evesham 1333 DDR Athlon on an Asus A7-266 motherboard on Saturday, and need to know if the motherboard & socket will be suitable for future upgrades. |
