A year ago i had a cyrix 200+ and wanted an upgrade so i could survive doing some graphics work. I opted for the AMD K6 2 500. Well for 50 quid i got a lump of pig iron. Or at least thiats my opinion. On placing it in the board i found it to be slow and hot (even after applying thermal transfer paste and a stonking heatsink) I got the impression that this was most definately old technology stretched to its limits. Crippled by on board (and not on die) cache it was never to match intel on performance. Dont get me wrong i like the duron \ athlon range and am happy to see them whipping Intel but this is just not really up to the job. The core is just not scalable. Once the ... AMD have made some great chips that are ripe for clocking. They reguarly take .5 - 1.5 extra cycles, my 200 went to 275 and my current 500 runs at 575 on 125 mhz. Lots of cooling is needed but its been stable for 3 months with only two crashes, though i think windows was at fault. The chip gives good value for money without clocking them and support is just excellent. Often I get same day replies to email from AMD. Give this chip a try, but I am on to Athlon when the money is right. ... Read the complete review

Having read some of the other opinions expressed here at dooyoo, it seems you either love or hate the AMD K6-2. personally, having built many systems around this chip I have very seldom found there to be compatibility problems except with certain software which seems to demand an intel chip to run optimally. there is no doubt it blows away comparable speed cyrix chips and gave the last generation celerons a good run for their money, at a lower price. It should be remembered that the processor is only one component in a computer, albiet an important one, and the supporting components, motherboard especially, are of equal importance in the overall performance. ... I have to say I was apprehensive at first about AMD but after using a 300mhz processor I found its performance and stability to be excellent. AMD have a history of being good at integer operations but bad at floating point so Intel is a better buy for avid games players but in terms of value for money you can't get better than the K6/2 range. This product line is ideal for office computers which won't ever need to play games and it goes up to 550mhz which is more than adequate for powerpoint, spreadsheets and word processing. Because of the speed of the processor it needs quite a good fan otherwise you will find your computer beings to smell of ... Read the complete review

I've had K62s for about a year now. I started with a 350 and now have a K62 500. The only reason I bought was money reasons. Anyway, I have to admit that although it doesn't have the power of equivalent P3 or Athlon, for the price its damn good. Coupled with my Voodoo 3000 I have no trouble running all games at 1024. In fact all games run the same in 640 as 1024 because the CPU is not fastest for my video card. However I have no problems. Compatibility is not an issue, spped is not an issue, in fact I get higher benchmarks than several people with P3s. 45fps in Quake3 at 1024 with max graphics and A3D sound is fine for me thanks.
