This specific processor is part of the "Pentium Dual Core" range, which is basically the Core 2 range of processors, but targeted at being for use with budget computer builds. It uses the Intel Socket 775 pin system for installation which means that this processor competes with the Celeron, Pentium 4 and Core 2 Duo, Quad and Extreme families. This is probably the most common Intel socket type for general computers nowadays, and it's been used for some time, so a seasoned computer builder will probably be able to install the processor using the Intel push pin system. I did have some annoyances with the push pin installation system, for example one pin popping back up when pushing in the opposite pin.
Of course, it's not really comparable to the Core 2 Quad series for example. However, it is fantastic for general use. At the normal clock speed of 2.5Ghz, it performs well in day to day tasks as well as faring decently in some of today's video games. Another positive point is that the chip is manufactured using the 45nm fabrication process which means it is more energy efficient and produces less heat loss. It supports some of the processor enhancement techonologies, but being a more budget chip, it does not feature a massive amount of cache, virtualisation or instruction set. Many people would find that some of those features are not important in a CPU like this one.
At normal setup, the processor uses a 200Mhz front side bus and the multiplier is 12.5. THis of course creates the 2.5Ghz clock speed. One amazing fact of this processor is that due to the low fsb and high multiplier, and the efficiency, it is possible to overclock the processor to reach much higher clock speeds. It is even possible to reach speeds of over 3.5Ghz with some voltage increases. (Note that overclocking can cause instability, reduced lifespan or damage to components if not done optimally and is done at your own risk). I am currently running the processor fine to write this review at 3.3Ghz.
With technology advancing so fast, this processor is not exactly cutting edge, but remains a solid option on a budget.
