Advantages: Best one at the time(or so i thought), It works
Disadvantages: Slow, Expensive, Unreliable
About 3 years ago, I decided to upgrade my computer. At the time I had a Cyrix 686 P150. This computer was slow, and I thought it was the worst computer in the world. I was wrong.... I then decided to look around, and somebody told me about the brand new(at the time) Intel Pentium II 400mhz computer. Since it was an upgrade (i.e. changing the motherboard, processor, and case) it would cost about £200. My parents said they would kindly buy me a brand new Voodoo BANSHEE, which cost £100 at the time as well. I thought, oh, brilliant, a new computer and a new graphics card. So, I went out and purchased the motherboard and processor, which cost £200. And my parents got me my new graphics card. I got home and was set up in no time. At first, as you usually are, I was so impressed with my new computer. Then after a couple of months, I started to notice that my fathers computer was faster in some ways, especially starting up. I was dissapointed to find that my new so called fast computer was not as fast as my fathers Pentium 200. Of course, I know that the amount of drivers and devices that start up affects the loading time of your computer, but surely the P2 400 would load a lot faster than the P200. I know it sounds wierd that a Pentium is faster than a Pentium II, then the double clock speed, but I am telling the truth. Also, now and then, when I start my computer, it beeps, and sais that it is a Pentium 2 100mhz. This confused me at first, so i took it to a computer expert who ran tests on it for 24 hours. He told me at the end of it, that there was nothing wrong with it. I have now decided that in February 2002, I am going to purchase the AMD Athlon 1.4ghz(or the fastest athlon at the time), since I decided a couple of years ago that I would never purchase any Intel processor ever again since this experience. At the moment it is going to cost me £500 for a whol
e new base unit(Motherboard £100, Processor £100, Case £20, Memory £100, Fan £90, Graphics Card £90, Sound Card £80), not including the Hard Drive and Monitor, since I already have a 40gig HDD and a 17" Monitor. Or maybe I am expecting too much from the new computers these days?

- 22/09/01 Yup, Del Boys right. Pentium 2's walk all over the original pentiums, check your other components! |

- 22/09/01 A P2-400 is in no way slower than a Pentium 200!
A computer however is only as good as the sum of it's parts. If the parts are bad, ie HD, Memory then even with the fastest processor in the World your computer is going to be rubbish. |
