I have previously written a review of working as a public librarian (please read that one too if you're interested in how the jobs differ) and now the following review will cover the other aspect of librarian work; working in schools, colleges and universities. Before you start, this may seem obvious but you really do need to be passionate about books, reading or the subject (if you're in a specialist library in a university), otherwise it comes across to the students. I have been an academic librarian for almost a year now and I consider it such a privilege of a job. My employment title is a Learning Resources Coordinator and I am based in an FE college (sixth form) in the South West. We are now offering Foundation Degrees so we are also becoming an HE (university level) library too. We are ranked as one of the top FE colleges in the country and the learning resources and library play a key part in the lives of all who attend. We supply texts and material for staff and students.
