Advantages: Can be a life-altering experience

Disadvantages: Cost, you graduate a year later, particularly important if you have a September birthday

After my A-Levels, I decided that I wanted to take my mind off studying for a while and do something totally different for a while so I went and worked in a Romanian orphanage for a year.

As I had an offer for medicine, going to Romania was useful in terms of what I wanted to do with my life after university and the whole experience was one which changed me as a person and altered my outlook on life.

In Romania, I was left in charge of 15 toddlers during the week from age 18 months to 5 years, which was not easy, but it was very satisfying. At the weekend, I worked with children infected by the HIV virus who were ten to twelve years old.

I wouldn't have swapped this year for anything and if there is something you want to do in a GAP year, my best advice is JUST DO IT, I'm sure you won't regret it!!
