Advantages: Lots of training materials
Disadvantages: Too many, too easy
I'm an MCSE myself but I believe that there are simply too many MCSE's out there and the certification has lost it's value. Don't get me wrong, it's better than no certification but it is no longer a badge of competence. Anyone with a few weeks to spare and access to cramsessions and braindumps can pass with little or no hands-on experience. It's time for Microsoft to consign MCSE to the entry-level and introduce a Master Qualification for the real professionals.

- 13/12/00 Good op - there are far too many people with these "qualifications" ; now. They aren't worth the paper they are written on 'cos people think they can take them (and they are easy) and walk into a job - whereas in actuality most companies would take someone with six months on the job experience instead of a "newbie" straight out of college with an MCSE or an MCP. |

- 07/08/00 I would agree with most of what was said here, there probably are too many MCSEs out there now, and the qualification is too easy to achieve. On the other hand, few companies are willing to take on MCSEs who don't have any experience, as I found to my cost. Luckily I've got plenty of development experience, and having those 4 letters on my CV helped me get a job doing development and technical, and it is good for the company as well, as I count towards their tally for Solution Provider status. Microsoft (and all the other vendor specific certification providers) are in a cleft stick, if they make it too hard then it makes their product look too difficult to support and support staff too expensive, while too many MCSEs (etc), make the qualification look cheap. I think the upgrades required may help over time, as only the committed and experienced will be bothered to keep the certification up to date. An expert qualification might help, but who in IT has the time to be studying for and taking exams the whole time (not me I can assure you!!) |

- 06/08/00 Were you a 'cramming dumper' - I'll ask the next engineer I meet. It does certainly seem that if you want to get ahead get a MCSE, it's hardly an apprenticeship is it? I like the idea of an advanced qualification, but I think it would have more relevance if it had to be taken over a period of time so that experience was built into the package. |
