The Intel C++ Compiler 7.0 delivers optimal performance on Intel 32 bit processors, including the Pentium 4 and Intel Xeon processors, and the 64 bit Itanium and Itanium 2 processors. It offers improvements to its advanced optimization features, such as vectorization and Streaming SIMD Extensions 2 (SSE2) for IA 32, software pipelining for the Itanium/Itanium 2 architecture, and Interprocedural Optimization and Profile Guided Optimization. The Intel Compiler now offers specific optimization options (G1, G2) for Itanium and Itanium 2 processors respectively, to take advantage of the latest Intel 64-bit architecture. In addition, the Intel C++ Compiler has improved source and object native-code compatibility with Microsoft Visual C++ .NET and now provides a fully featured plug-in capability with Microsoft Visual Studio .NET environment. Furthermore, the Intel C++ Compiler maintains its full source and object code compatibility with Microsoft Visual C++ 6.0 and its plug-in compatibility with the Visual Studio 6.0 environment.

The Intel Compiler has added extended language directives for software pipelining, loop unrolling and data prefetching, that provide information to the compiler to enhance optimization of application code. In addition, it supports industry standards such as ANSI C/C++ and ISO C/C++. It also provides development and optimization capability for threaded applications through its new support of the OpenMP 2.0 standard for C/C++, and the enhanced Auto-Parallization feature.
