      Advantages

      Disadvantages

Good for legacy development, but has not aged well

Covering the pre-.NET languages supported by microsoft, this is a sturdy tool for development - as long as you are developing using microsoft frameworks of course. I have developed MFC, DirectX and .COM objects using this tool and can vouch for it's usefulness here (not sure about the newer dx 10 framework however). Lack of clear documentation here can be overcome by buying one of the many books that litter amazon nowadays but overall I find this IDE to be slightly clunky. The autocomplete (intellisense) works "ok" in this edition but is nothing to write home about. Lack of refraction tools makes this a pain for larger projects but you get used to it in the long run. The web development tool is nigh on useless nowadays, so please dont purchase for that alone! The VB included is probably the best feature here as it is relatively straight forward and packs more speed than its .NET counterpart in general execution time.

      Advantages

      Disadvantages

Covering Visual C++, Visual J++ (until MS phase it out), FoxPro, Visual Basic, InterDev, SourceSafe and more this is the all-in-one package that the every Windows developer should own. InterDev draws the whole complicated affair together and the learning curve is quite steep, but oncve you mastered the basics the level of integration is stunning. All of the pieces fit together beautifully well and the degree of control handed to the user for code creation in the visual environment, debugging and maintenance is far better than anything I've used in the past. All-in-all a top flight package, I suspect for many, it may be seriously over-the-top but for the serious developer this can't be beaten. Shame there's no proper paper documentation though ....
