Advantages: Easy to grasp, easy to use...
Disadvantages: Bit pricy the software...
When I grow up I want to be a programmer, and I thought why not start to learn to program now at my age (14)? So I went on various chat rooms, that are to do with programming and they all suggested that I start me programming life with Visual Basic, That’s a programming language, well, that’s basic!
-*-*- What is BASIC in a bit more detail? -*-*-
Well Basic you can’t really get many details in, infact that was a stupid title to put, but BASIC also stands for Beginners All-Purpose Symbolic Instruction Code, well there you are. But to write programs I needed to learn this language, and I also needed a compiler to write the programs in, and the compiler was Microsoft Visual Basic.
-*-*- About Microsoft Visual Basic -*-*-
If you know a little about writing programs, you may know that you need to write all of it out in code, and it looks like a load of rubbish to the average computer user,
Label1.Caption = “Hey” + Str (Val(Text1.Text) = Val (Text2.Text)
Ok, so that’s how you program, and visual basic means programming but visually, so u get a blank area that’s called a form, and that’s all you do is draw shapes, or maybe buttons or whatever your program is going to consist of. That’s how it’s visual.
If you wanted to create a calculator program, then all you have to do is draw what you want on the form, place the buttons and write in your line of code that you wish that button to do. It’s that simple, so the only problem really is learning all the codes but that is necessary and will take time.
Once you open up the program on the left you have a toolbar and it has the following features;
Picture bar = you will insert this and a picture will appear in your program.
Label – If your program needs to produce written output you would put one of these here.
Textbox – If your program needed a written input.
Command Button – If on a calculator program this would be a + symbol or whatever.
Checkbox – For making a selection in your program
Dropdown Menu – If you needed to select from a list.
Timer – If you wanted to create simple animations like make a butterfly fly.
They are the main buttons that you can use if you are writing a program in Visual Basic as you may have gathered, this is fairly simple you’re not going to create top of the range graphics, or earn millions upon millions from any game that you create in this but it’s a start.
One of the good things about Visual Basic is when you write a program it often has a code error, or it’s got a little bug in the program, and then when you come to compile your program it will highlight your problem and then you don’t have to go through all the program.
When you install a program, any program if it’s a good one, you often have to give a serial key number and it has a box where you have to read al the rights, and agree etc. Well if you wanted to make your program like that then it has a special wizard that will help you do that and it will make your program look al, professional.
There is a lot of stuff that you can do with Visual Basic that can be quite useful, like you could set up an e-mail wizard and add it to your webpage; you can make WebPages in it! The list just goes on forever.
So you have your program and you want to start learning Visual Basic, but how can you learn, well the old way and probably the best way is to get a book, and that’s what I got ‘Visual Basic in easy Steps’ by Tim Anderton and I can say that it has been very helpful to me. But if you like you may go for the internet courses, whichever way you choose. But Visual Basic has a built in feature called the MSDN, and that is very helpful when you get stuck.
Once you have learned the basic codes and stuff then all you can do is play about with all the little features, if I mentioned them all in the review I might as well be saying Happy 2007. (That was implementing that there is too many to list.)
-*-*- Overall -*-*-
If you are a buzzing programmer like me, then this will be a great way to start. I cant tell you whether it works because I don’t know the language fully yet, but I have created my own calculator program which means that its pretty good, the program is quite expensive to buy normally around 80 pound but I got mine for 30 off eBay. I hope this review has been a help to you and that you may want to start programming.

mo79 - 18/01/06 I once tried VB...oo, around 10yrs ago. I didn't have the patience to stick with it, but it certainly is a fun first building block. =) |
