Advantages: Cheap Beer, good music
Disadvantages: Location
5th Avenue had the company of me for the first time a few months back, after being some what reluctantly dragged there. You see i would have preferred to go to Rock World not being an indie kid. Anywho after paying the quite hefty sum of £5 to get in, this being a Friday night, and if you are a girl its free, i made my way into the club. Its quite a dark club and the smoke machines are often used to excess making the club look dingy, reminding me that i wanted to be in Rock World. I took my place at the bar and was surprised to find the price of the beers to be very low, £1 for a bottle of carlsberg or heineken. Other drinks can be bought, spirits, alco-pops you name it, but all more expensive, though not too expensive the average price for a alco-pop being around £2. I was planning on drinking a lot to perhaps drown out the constant Oasis, although i do like them a bit, or this is what i thought it would be like, and i was wrong. The first song that came on was The magnificant Strokes, so i was down on the dancefloor dancing away to what i thought would be one of a few songs i would dance to. But no the next song was the White Stripes, so i remained on the dance floor. The night continued like this with Charlatans, Oasis, Shed 7, Gomez, the Stone Roses, The Bluetones and my personal indie favourite Ocean Colour Scene, and many more. The indie was broken in bits and bobs by some semi alternative music ie. Green day, Rage Against The Machine and Nirvana. I When Nirvana did come on and a mosh pit broke out, the bouncers were quick to act and waded in breaking it up. I was impressed with this, as it showed the bouncers cared about us lol. The dancefloor is of quite a decent size, but it is always packed and you are left with not much room to dance, which is why people form little break away groups off the dancefloor. Keep an eye out for one crazy woman dancer who dances in tiny skirts just off the dancefloor. When the club becomes too packed, then
the upstairs part is opened. Queue the mad rush to get upstairs and get a seat, as seating downstairs is limited. Once upstairs their is a bar and most people like to spend their time to just stand above the dancefloor and watch the guy doing the Bez impression. The Dj supposively takes requests but he did not play any of my requests which were reasonable, some OCS and Bluetones. If he does not play your requests be wary when going back to him to ask again, although he is behind a cage, he can get a bit stroppy and annoyed and may start to throw things at you. Only bad things about the club is price to get in, although the price of the beer, more than makes up for this. The DJ and his stroppy moods, and the location, which unless familiar to Manchester City Centre is hard to find. All in all it is a good night and well worth a visit, even if you are not a huge indie fan, as i never realised just how much indie i liked until i went.

- 24/03/02 im going there in a few weeks, you could have added more about the place (different days of the week for example). Im appalled that women get in free whilst blokes have to pay. |
