Having been told numerous times to visit The Bug Bar since its recent refurbishment, I decided to venture there on Saturday night. The night was called Sonorous & was told it was going to be a blend of Jazzual beats, & dance music. Having not been to The Bug Bar before, I found this night exceptional. The atmosphere was really laid back, but also a real party mood. Being over 30 (& tired of big superclubs), it was fantastic being in a small, intimate, club vibe. I had come home. In the spectacular setting of the bar which is set in a church crypt, you can lose yourself. The drinks are fairly priced & the bartenders make a mean Mai Tai. The only slight problem was the heat. Ventilation isn't the best, but you can expect to get hot & sweaty when your dancing like a lunatic. You can always dive outside in the garden to get some fresh air. I would recommend this bar to anyone who's up for a good time, with like minded people. 10/10 :)

It all starts so well. You go in early on a Friday and crash on a sofa to cool jazz funk. You grab a beer and chat away to friends beneath the low cellar ceiling. You think life is pretty good and relaxed. Then, about half past nine, it all goes horribly wrong. The hard-edged music starts, several decibels higher, and the bouncers take up their macho stance seemingly everywhere. Suddenly you feel quite harrassed, and I've rarely had to show my hand stamp to be allowed back in to a bar from the toilets. The cleintele becomes more and more street, and you beat a hasty path to the door before it gets too much. If you're a bit of a fogey like me, get out early. If you like your music hard, loud and edgy, then go later on. Just let me out first.

The bug bar is one of Brixton's premiere nightspots, but that doesn't change the fact that it's also one of the most poorly ventilated venues anywhere in London. I kid you not, you will sweat like a proverbial dog if you try and have a full-on night out here, because it's sub-terranial with extremely low cielings. So be warned. Friday nights and I think it's about £7 on the door, enter down through a narrow stairwell into a poorly-lit basement area. Bar is at the back, drinks usual clubby prices, then there's quite a cool seating area bizarrely right splat bang in the middle of the whole joint. Chill out on a sofa quaffing an imported ber until the banging tunes (usually fairly speedy breakbeats, as I recall) deafen you to the point where you either dance your arse off or leave. Personally, I think this place is too hot and noisy to really be able tto enjoy yourself, but maybe I'm just turning into an old fogey who's content to go to a restaurant or more chilled-out watering hole, than scream at the top of my lungs at the barman to get me a large G&T .
