The Elbow rooms is different from must pool halls/bars in the fact that it is friendly and welcoming. The club is only a 5 minute walk from Angel tube station(Northern line). The clubs website gives a very decent map which helps if you dont know the area that well.
Most pool halls/bars that I have been to are always dark/dinghy and usually the custumer base is slightly on the shady side :-) The Elbow rooms differs in the fact that its decor is more closely related to that of a trendy west-end bar and the customer base to match.
There is a vast range of usual bar drinks from larger, ales and wine's and the more expensive tipples, the prices are reasonable for London! The club also offers waiter/waitress service for people who are playing on the pool tables. Food is also good with a good range of bar snacks and more substantial meals, prices are what you would expect to pay in a normal bar and service is usually prompt.
What makes this place different from other halls is the fact that the Elbow rooms also cater for the casual drinkers who dont want to play pool, and maybe have a dance as the evening wears on.
Getting down to the nitty gritty of why this place is succesfull is simple, the pool, the club has 9 large american size tables, with another available in a private room. There is a vast array of cue's, triangles and chalk so there no need to go hunting for your desired weapon. The tables are of a good standard and are well maintained, they are well spaced so you dont have to worry about clashing with other players.
The only criticism I have with this place is their policy on play, unless you book a table for a number of hours, at £20/hour then you have to settle for 1 hour slots at £9/hour, once this is over if you want more you have to go to the back
of the queue for a table.
If you want to come here make sure you get there early, as the place gets exceedingly busy from about 8 onwards, usually with large queue's forming outside.
