Advantages: Thai food, interesting beds instead of tables
Disadvantages: Gets very busy, bit too trendy for me!
The Evil Eye is a cocktail bar on one of the main thoroughfares in York, Stonegate. It is slightly tucked away, but you can enter through the Bottle shop which is more obvious from the front. Evil Eye is a bohemian style cocktail bar which also serves a variety of beers and soft drinks. Throughout, the bar is decorated in a "bohemian" style, and upstairs there are rooms with big wooden beds. These are decorated with arabic style furnishings and lots of cushions, the idea being that you and your mates sit on these instead of at tables.
The bar is open throughout the day and is well known in York for its Thai food. Prices are relatively reasonable, with main courses beginning at about £6-7. There aren't many other Thai restaurants in York so it's worth bearing this in mind. On a Sunday they also cook a roast, you get a huge plate of meat, potatoes and veg for £6.50, though it can be awkward to eat if you're on one of the beds...!
Evil Eye has a bit of a reputation for having the bar staff serving attractive/cool people before others. I can't say I've experienced this first hand but it's reputation puts me off being a regular visitor! It can get quite busy and has been in the paper over the last year or so for contravening fire safety rules. But I guess this won't affect you if you're drunk on a night out! Prices at the bar are standard for the type of place this is, with pints costing around £3. I'd recommend going there during the day, when it is quieter.
Summary: Good if you're into this kind of thing - you'll find me in a pub down t'road!
