"Johnny Depp's favourite bar in York", proud locals will tell you in this Stonegate coctail bar. Regardless of the validity of this claim, the Evil Eye lounge is a bohemien reserve which lies in between the two main trends in York of old man pubs and generic, bland nightlife.

The bar would be described as "quirky". Uneven shelves prop up the spirit bottles and if you're lucky enough you may even be able to enjoy your mojitos while sitting on a four-poster bed on the first floor. With food served daily, internet access, beer garden and a separate shop, the Evil Eye provides you with all the normal facilities you would expect from a bar of its calibre.

The food draws its inspiration from a variety of cultural sources, and is thoroughly enjoyable. The coctails, it must be said, are not made with cutting edge techniques, but are done with as much proficiency and expertise you can find anywhere in York.

But this is the problem. It's still in York. A bar like this, for all its merits, can only do so much in a city like this. It has, however, got a devoted following there. If you are in York the Evil Eye lounge is a must.
