The new G-A-Y under the Villiers Arches - London
Member Name: Siamese
Advantages: A fab, friendly and happy night
Disadvantages: Not as good as the old Astoria
Every year for the last 5 years, I have travelled to London for Pride weekend and had some amazing nights out in GAY Astoria that was once on the Charing Cross Road in London. I was gutted to hear that it was closing, and when we went to London this year, it had gone - sad days. I think it fair to say that everyone who went there, mourned the loss of the place.
So, this year, we had to try the new G-A-Y club has now moved to Heaven, which is under the arches in Villiers Street. It was free entry on the Fri night (with wristbands handed out around Soho) and then on the Sat night, Lady Gaga appeared, so there were MASSIVE queues. We braved the queues and managed to get in though, lots of people didn't!
First impressions were that it was good, but not as good as the old Astoria. One of the draws of the Astoria was how big it was, 3 floors and massive ceilings. No matter how packed it was, it still wasn't uncomfortably so. Unfortunately, I found the Arches to be not big enough, we were jam packed in, though this was Pride weekend so I am sure that it isn't normally as bad.
The toilets were also a bit of a nightmare with huge queues at times, but hey, with so many people, what else can you expect.
Overall, it was a great night, but I still wish the old Astoria was still there! If you are looking for a great night out in London, then give it a try, you will have fun!
Summary: Give this a try if in London!
