The Grenadier has always been well known for its excellent bloody mary and friendly environment.
I have had some fantastic evenings at the Grenadier and cannot speak more highly of it. Having not been for a good 6 months I was disapointed. My greeting was some what hostile and the quality of bloody mary has gone out the window! I was clearly being too demanding when I questioned the bloody mary and then asked for the vodka coke to be replaced with diet coke as we had originally ordered! I accept it may have been busy but to then refuse to replace the drink or serve us another was a little odd. I might add we had only had 1 drink so were far from in a bad state.
I suspect there needs to be a rethink on some staffing issues.
It is still a classic pub and well worth a visit albeit I am worried they are marketing heavily on the tourist side.
London is short on characterful, unspoiled pubs, but this out-of-the-way Knightsbridge favourite won't disappoint anybody. Set in a typical London cobbled mews, and covered with a superb floral display, the Grenadier is famed for its military connections (the Duke of Wellington was a regular, and the pub is supposedly haunted by one of his officers who was flogged to death for cheating at cards). Inside is a 200-year-old pewter bar and a seductively dark and cosy atmosphere, plus good basic grub and a decent selection of ales. It can get very busy, though. (18 Wilton Row, SW1; 020 7235 3074)
