I stumbled across The Halzephron Inn in the Good Pub Guide. I was visiting my family in Cornwall in April 2001, and on the way back from Mullion I suggested to my mum a visit to this pub as it had such a high quality rating in my favourite guide!! I was not at all disappointed.

The pub is at a tiny little place called Gunwalloe, 4 miles south of Helston. It is nearby to the well sign-posted Halzephron Herb Farm (also well worth a visit). The pub itself was built approx. 500 years ago - believed to be an old smugglers haunt. At the beginning of the 20th century it was delicensed (then known as 'The Ship'), and was empty until 1958 when the pub was restored and renamed The Halzephron Inn. The word 'Halzephron' means "cliffs of hell" in Cornish.

Inside, the pub is similar to most other good cornish pubs - cosy, small with a strong wooden theme. Parking is easily available.


The Halzpehron has an excellent selection of real ales as well as the usual spirits and wines. The real ale is well kept, hence the mention in the Good Pub Guide. I highly recommend the food - The Halzephron was proclaimed the "Cornwall Dining Pub of The Year" in the Good pub Guide 2001. The food selection is wide and varied, utilising fresh local produce. I had sampled the Thai crab cakes and my mum had seafood chowder - both meals were delicious, well-presented and fresh. In fact, the food was so good I am returning next Saturday for a meal when I visit Cornwall again! Meals are served 12-2pm, 7-9pm. The food is not cheap, but reasonable value considering the quality.

The Halzephron also has accommodation, which I have not tried. There are 2 rooms, en-suite, with Tv and tea/coffee making facilities. Full English breakfast is provided. Prices quoted at 34-38 pounds per room per night from Easter 2001.


The atmosphere and staff are very friendly, and we were made to feel very welcome. This pub is well worth a vi
sit- you will not be disappointed! The views outside the pub are amazing, and there are some lovely places nearby if you visit that area for the day - eg, the Lizard, Coverack, Mullion, Cadgwith.
