Advantages: thick bacon/toast, generous amounts of orange juice, very tasty
Disadvantages: slightly burnt tomato, dark atmosphere in pub
In this review I won't be reviewing a certain Wetherspoon Pub. I will be reviewing one of their products, the Farmhouse Breakfast. I went to the Torquay Wetherspoon which opens at 9am which is a good time for breakfast.
I will briefly state what I thought of the pub itself. I found it to be very dark and lacking in atmosphere. They do not seem to play any music and it was very quiet and dark even though there were many people eating there. The tables are a bit sticky from years of spilt drinks but that's the same in any pub. The toilets where decent but this is in the morning when they have just been cleaned. The staff there were polite and happy to help, something you don't always get in chain pubs.
The Farmhouse breakfast is the larger of the two breakfasts that Wetherspoon offers. It costs £3.79 and contains the following:
2x Rasher of Bacon
2x Sausage
2x Fried Egg
3x Hash Brown
1x Big Mushroom
1x Big Tomato
2x Slice of Toast
A decent portion of beans
For around £1.50 I also had a glass of orange juice. I was quite impressed with this as I got a large glass and not a small one as in some other places.
The meal itself was fantastic. Here are my comments on each of the items:
Bacon - Thick cut and very tasty. Not much fat compared to a Sainsbury's breakfast etc.
Sausage - Soft and easy to cut. I found them very tasty and I didn't experience any off-putting gristle.
Egg - The eggs were light and fluffy. They were cooked both sides so you didn't get much loose yoke which is good for some and bad for others. They were not very wet and greasy, as are some in other breakfasts.
Hash Browns - Not much to say. The same as what you might buy in Tesco.
Big Tomato - Mine was a bit burnt on the top which concealed the tomatoes taste. My companions was fine so I think this was a one off.
Big Mushroom - A single large mushroom instead of many small ones is different. It wasn't too greasy which is a good point for me. It was soft and easy to cut and tasted natural.
Beans - Like Heinz Beanz, not much to say.
Toast - Generous amount. Thick cut white bread and quite soft.
Overall I thought this breakfast was great. Usually you only get thick cut bacon and nice toast in farmhouse B&BS. However Wetherspoon rivalled these and was defiantly better than a supermarket breakfast.
Summary: Much better than a supermarky breakfast.

- 20/08/08 That's the trademark of JDW - no music and no games machines. Just the way it should be. Wish more pubs followed their lead, that and inexpensive beer as well, of course. |

- 16/08/08 The beer tends to be as cheap as the women in their Northampton pubs. |
