Advantages: cheap drink, cheap food, clean and spacious, rarely music or sport

Disadvantages: a little bit impersonal

Wetherspoons is a pub chain in the UK. I've been in a fair few of them in my four years as a student, simply because the food and drinks are equally cheap. In particular I've spent time in those in central Glasgow (Sauchiehall St, the Lloyds Bar, and the Counting House on George Square).

One of the other main draws for me with the chain is the frequent lack of music or sports, because sometimes you just want a quiet drink without having to raise your voice in order to be heard. In my experience the pubs are generally roomy and well-kept - they mostly have pretty large premises - and the staff friendly and decently trained. There is lots of varied seating, and usually a family area.

Drinks are varied and cheap and there are a multitude of offers involving multi-buys or pitchers. There is a large selection of soft drinks for those not wanting alcohol, and they serve a range of coffees, teas and cakes/biscuits/pastries. Also I noticed recently they have a yearly wine festival involving deals on various new wines.

I particularly like the menu. I think it's Wetherspoons' best selling point and it keep me coming back again and again. Not only is the food cheap and cheerful (again there are combo deals and multibuys) but there are easy-to-spot veggie and coeliac signs, which is really helpful for people like me with dietary requirements. Plus there are themed times - Curry Club, Sunday Roast, etc, which are excellent value for money.

I wouldn't recommend Wetherspoons to a traditionalist pub-goer, since the concept is more modern and the atmosphere less homely and personal. However, if you're looking for a drink and a chat and a good plate of cheap grub, I'd definitely give it a shout.

Summary: give it a whirl
