Advantages: Cheap Beer
Disadvantages: Food can be of random quality
Wetherspoons was founded by 1979, and it's chain of pubs have been spreading steadily across the U.K ever since.
All pubs have a non-music policy - which many people enjoy, as it creates a social atmosphere and allows speech without raised voices.
The food offers great value for money - but it can be quite random with regards to the quality. For example, i've been served a mixed grill one week where the steak is perfectly cooked and tender - then the next week the same dish has been burned, dry and scrawny. I suppose for the price, you can afford to take the gamble.
There was also a bit of controversy recently when it was discovered that the majority of Wetherspoons steaks were not actually from U.K cattle, and were in fact made from Zebu - which is an African mammal. Whilst it doesn't bother me, many people have stopped eating Wetherspoons steaks as a result. Nowadays it generally says on their menu whether each dish is from U.K produce.
I find Wetherspons curries to be of a consistent quality - again offering good value for money - especially on curry night, where you get a free drink with your meal. The Chicken Tikka is probably my favourite option, and is served with poppadom and naan bread.
Service is quick with generally a 15-20 min turnaround time, although during busy periods you can wait up to an hour for food.
Every so often you get dodgy dinners - a friend recently was served a chicken salad - with frozen lumps of chicken - she sent it back only to be told "the chef say's there's nothing he can do about it" - however, a refund was quickly issued.
Drinks are very cheap - probably the cheapest you can get. Buying a round at Wetherspoons is never going to break the bank. This is probably the main attraction for many - and the reason Wetherspoons has gained such popularity.
The Wetherspoons closest to me has fairly friendly staff - but it can be almost impossible to get a drink on a saturday nite - as the pub is so packed. You can end up waiting around 20 minutes to be served - not good! There are also quite a few drink related incidents due to the lack of doormen in the venue.
Give Wetherspoons a go for food - you'll get a decent meal 7/10 times, and for the price it's worth the gamble.
Summary: All round pretty good
