Advantages: Cheap!
Disadvantages: Dodgy clientele
I have been visiting my local wetherspoons 'The whispering moon' since the time I was about 17, shhhhhhhh, don't tell!
It was always popular amongst my group of friends as a very cheap place to drink and also get a meal. In fact, my best friend and I went through a total chicken pasta alfredo and would have it every time we ordered food. We would also have the very sweet bereich bernkastel white wine. The cheapest bottle they do, which we now hate with a passion. Tastes mature, eh?
Another phase I had was black russians. A well known cocktail consisting of vodka, tia maria and coca cola. These were on offer for a long time I remember, and I'd frequently get smashed on them. Wouldn't touch them now, sickeningly sweet.
Well, now I have a little boy and rarely have the time or money for a social life. But, tomorrow being OH's birthday, we decided to pop to the moon for lunch as it just five minutes walk from our home. There are high chairs, so we grabbed one for Reed, and sat in the family section which was thankfully very quiet.
My partner decided on a burger meal where you get a drink included, I chose chicken pasta alfredo (surprise surprise), and a kiddies meal for Reed. We were given his activity pack, crayons and pictures to colour in, which kept him happy, but told they had run out of fruit bags and were offered no substitute which I felt to be poor service.
The food arrived quickly, but wasn't up to scratch. Bf's burger was very tough and he left half of it. I also found my pasta to be no where near as pleasant as usual, watery and an odd consistency. Reed's meal didn't look too nice either. He ate some sausage, but refused his beans and mash. Being a fussy toddler, he is reluctant to eat at the best of times anyway! When OH went to the bar for another drink, he heard an old couple complaining to the bar staff about their food. Not just us who weren't impressed then.
Wetherspoons food is at least competitively priced, and you can now purchase main meals from as little as £2.99 from their value meals section. The drinks are also well priced if you want alcohol, about average for soft drinks. My favourite recent addition to their wines list is a bollinger, sparkling rosé. They charge around £10 a bottle which is not bad at all for a sparkling, but I can buy it in sainsburys for about 3 quid less.
There are the usual smelly old drunks and young chavvy drunks who congregate here due to the cheap drinks, but you might find them in any pub. I've had good nights and bad in the moon, but generally as long as you get a booth for some privacy, you can have an enjoyable time. I will carry on visiting, not expecting luxury but just a working class place to enjoy a cheap drink and a reasonable meal (when the chef's not having a bad day!).
Summary: Visit if you can cope with the mediocrity

- 24/05/09 Nicely reviewed. I think the food in Wetherspoons is an affront to the term "pub grub" and stopped eating in these places ages ago. |
