If you're after an alternative to chain clubs and chart tunes then look no further than Jilly's Rockworld. As the name suggests, Jilly's is home to Manchester's finest selection of rock 'n' roll and is celebrated for its wide variety of music and history as the second oldest club in the city.
The Venue
Jilly's is situated on Oxford Street next to its sister venue, The Music Box. Currently it is hidden under a tower of scaffolding, so look out for a big blue sign with an array of black clothes and dyed hair underneath.
Inside the club is a bit of a labyrinth, with 4 rooms each playing different genres of music. There are 3 main bars, 4 dance floors and loads of places to sit - Jilly's is a really big venue so it does take a while for it to fill up. There are a few vintage arcade games and pool tables dotted about, as well as a smoking area outside, and the lights are kept down low so crazy dancing is encouraged!
The People
Every weekend Jilly's pulls a really diverse crowd of all ages, and welcomes everyone. The atmosphere is pretty relaxed, with plenty of room to sit and chat as well a nice big area to mosh (and boy do people mosh!) Often regular customers like to show off their skills on the dance floor, and it's not unusual to see people with devil sticks or diablos. Both the bouncers and bar staff are really friendly, a few of the doormen have been working at the club over 30 years and won't hesitate to tell you a few of their stories. The club has a really good alternative vibe where everyone can get on regardless of how you dress or what you listen to.
The Music
For primarily a 'rock' club, Jilly's covers a wide variety of genres on all nights, playing a mixture of funk rock, thrash metal, alternative, punk, grunge, trance, goth and everything in-between. With 4 rooms, it's easy to find something that makes you want to dance and all DJ's are willing to take request (even the strangest ones.) Generally each room plays something a little different each night, so take a look around - there's defiantly enough rock 'n' roll to suit everyone!
Club nights are Cheapskates Thursday, Allnighter Friday (an epic 10 hours of rock!) and Rockbottom Saturday with many gigs throughout the week. See the website for upcoming gigs as well as Promo nights where record companies provide free CD's, badges and posters for the crowd.
The Drink
The drink isn't cheap, but it's not too expensive either. A night out on beer and cider won't set you back too much (at £1.95 a bottle for Fosters or Carlsberg) but house spirits range in price from £1.55. With 3 large bars, there's a lot to choose from, and look out for drinks deals they often have on Promo nights and special events.
Jilly's isn't the club for everyone, however if you're looking for a good time to a soundtrack of dirty guitars and heavy drums it's defiantly the place to be at the weekend.
Summary: Reccommended - see you next weekend!

- 23/05/09 I wish I'd known about this when I stayed in Manchester on business a few months ago when me and my colleagues were stuck for something to do after dinner. Sounds like a good time. Nicely reviewed. 8^) |
