We went to the justinlees for an anniversary lunch on Friday 26th April. I was looking forward to the steak pie and my husband had the fish, unfortunately both were inedible. The steak pie was all shorcrust pastry and a few bits of tough meat ,and the fish was like catfish deep fried in batter, the texture of which was slimy. I did complain and received a " sorry about that " . I only had to pay for our drinks but our day was spoiled by then. This is the second time in a year that we have been there , The first time not much better , but will definitely not be back until we can be sure the standards are higher.

My partner and I both had the stuffed chicken breast with bourbon sauce and expected the usual "boil in the bag / microwave " pubgrub and were pleasantly surprised with our meals : moist tasty chicken stuffed with delicious cheese and wrapped in ham , vegetables that were just the right texture and the potatoes in sauce were absolutely mouthwateringly good . The chocolate cake with icecream and the apple pie with icecream were an overindulgence as we were not hungry after the main course but we scoffed them anyway . The staff were friendly , welcoming and nothing was too much trouble ( Craig and Matthew were absolutely charming and an asset to the pub). I'm recommending them to everyone I know and we'll make a point of eating there again soon .The two puddings we had cost £4 which has to be the bargain of the year

      Disappointing.

We popped in for a meal at 7pm on a Tuesday. The surroundings are excellent, clean and tasteful. It certainly doesn't feel "pubby".

We ordered our drinks and got Red when we asked for White. The glass for the mineral water was dirty so was returned to the bar. Every alternative glass was equally dirty. Finally the problem was resolved by using a wine glass (these don't go through the mechanical glass washer apparently.

We were served by a very polite and engaging waiter who wasn't overbearing. In fact he struck a perfect balance.

The food came in good time. The portions were generous but not too much. However, the quality of the food was below mediocre. The burger was quite bland. The steak, which had been ordered as rare came very well done. To be fair, they took it back without quibble and promptly brought the replacement. This, at first glance, appeared to be what I ordered. Sadly, it was like chewing an old boot.

The staff did their best but We won't be going back to see if they can better it.

All-in-all, this was a big disappointment.

      Surroundings 8/10
      Service 8/10
      Food 2/10.

Used to like going to this pub, always had good pub food. Went along last night (mothering sunday) for the first time in ages and was very dissappointed. The service was appalling, the waiting staff couldn't care less, verging on rude. The standard of food has gone done. My burger had abviously been cooked for a very long time as it was very very dry, the chips were cold and the salad all there was of it was wilting. Quite a few people complained when we were in that there food was under cooked or the veg was missing! Not a nice way to spend mothering sunday. We will never be back. AVOID

Very pleased and will come again

I arrived un-announced at this venue and was immediately taken by the clean and presentable surroundings. They have just started a new menu (July 18th) and I gave it a try. Two meals for £5.99! I thought it would be nothing out of the ordinary but quite the opposite was true. I ordered Bangers and mash and had three sausages, a huge yorkshire pudding which fitted on the large plate, gravy, peas and mashed potato. Believe me it was HUGE and the quality was not compromised. I was very pleased and will certainly come again. The male waiter was attentive and smart and we were well looked after. I will certainly be going again.

Although this looks a pleasant pub with separate restaurant and claims to be family friendly, our presentable and well behaved family group (dad, mum & three children aged 10,12 & 14) was not even able to sit down for an evening meal. We arrived at about 19:30 when there seemed to be plently of space - to be told by the waitress that she was too busy to serve any one else in the non smoking section, and anyway no children are allowed in the restaurant after 22:00 so we were asked to leave. There was group of locals at the other one table that was occupied in the non smoking half of the restaurant (there appeared to be at least three tables free) - and they could not believe that we were not being served. So lots of stars for the locals and none for the restaurant (unless you want a child free family pub restaurant - but that was no good for us)

The Justinlees Inn in Dalkeith, Midlothian is one of the best family pubs I have been to in a while. I have been a patron of this pub/restaurant for many years and it has gone through a few changes in that time. I believe that it has now got it right. The conservatory area is perfect for taking children with you when you want to eat. There is no smoking in this area and there are plenty of toys for the kids. Fodd is of a very high standard, although the prices are very competitive. The Children's Menu has a good selection alson. Staff are very friendly and service is very quick. They have a wide selection of real ales and beers, asweel as a good wine list. Again prices are very good. Large screen TVs display most major sporting events and the pub has a very good and informal atmosphere.
