Advantages: Very pleasant food., Nice atmosphere., Friendly staff.

Disadvantages: None.

On a recent visit to Lincoln we decided that a pub lunch sounded a very good idea.

We were in the Lincoln Castle/Cathedral historic area of the town, where there are a whole collection of pubs, cafes and restaurants to choose from. This area of the town is very popular with tourists and so the businesses there are all vying for their trade. When we visit Lincoln we like to try somewhere different for our lunch on each visit. On this occasion we decided to eat at the Lion and Snake public house on Bailgate, close to the Cathedral.

Why did we choose this pub? Well, the menus were well displayed outside, there was a good choice of dishes, there were a number of vegetarian dishes (for my wife), it looked very clean and inviting, and the prices were not dear.

When you enter the pub, at first it does not seem very big, but it is a narrow pub that goes back quite a way and the main eating area is at the rear of the pub. The tables in the eating area were well spaced out, clean and the whole room was very inviting and warm.

The menus are on the tables and after deciding what it is that you want to eat, you order your food at the bar, informing the bar staff of your table number. The food is served at your table and also the waiting staff bring all of the cutlery, condiments etc. There was a good, comprehensive menu with most of the meals costing around £4 - £5. There was also a daily ‘special’, which was about £3.

We opted for the two course lunch option, which cost £3.95. For the main course there was a choice of:
Breaded chicken.
Bean Hot Pot. (Vegetarian).
Beef and Onion Pie.
Cottage Pie.
Haddock.
Each was served with chips or potatoes, and peas.

The second course was a choice of jam sponge pudding with custard or ice cream.

The meals were very tasty, hot and a decent size portion. The sponge puddings were delicious. The food appeared to be freshly cooked and the staff ensu
red that everything was to our satisfaction.

The pub is a ‘Mansfield Brewery’ pub, but as we are not great beer drinkers that did not matter too much to use.

There is some seating outside and I should imagine that in the Summer it must be very pleasant to have a meal outside.

When you try out a new pub for a meal it is always a bit of a gamble, but certainly on this occasion we were very pleased with the meal and the hospitality. The pub is very welcoming, nicely furnished and has very friendly staff.

If you are looking for a good home cooked meal in Lincoln, then I can certainly recommend this pub.
