We visited Hathersage on a Sunday lunchtime. The place was reasonably busy, the guy behind the bar trying to 'do it all'. The landlady was shouting orders and less than friendly. We ordered food (wish we hadn't) and waited and waited and waited................. when it finally did arrive the tuna was grey and dry, the buger (paper thin) had been deep fried (charcoal comes to mind), the 'roast of the day' was beef (or so it said - hard to tell) and the mixed grill - well!. the pork chop and lamb chop wereunrecognisable and so hard and dry they couldn't be cut - although to be fair the landlady did say the steak knife was blunt! The steak had to be returned (ordered as rare came as VERY well done), by the time it did come back the rest of the grill was stone cold, told we should have eaten the rest and the steak eaten separately!!!!
When we complained to the landlady she said 'and' followed by 'how dare you be so rude'. We pointed out that plates were going back nearly full - she said it was because they gave big portions! - more like inedible.
We weren't the only ones to complain but she just shouted at the customers, saying she'd done this for 20 years!!!!
We were offered a 5.00 refund off the bill and when pressed to refund for the entire mixed grill because it had not been eaten she waved her hand in a defient manner and said 'end of'. On principle we didn't give up and she eventually gave us 20% off.
Hathersage is a beautiful place to visit and I think the reason she is still open is because people are there for the day BUT never return to eat at her pub again, bet her return trade is nil. The service from the landlady is appalling but at least the young waiters and bar staff are friendly and pleasant. The food is expensive (for the above 61.85!) and almost uneatable. One member of the party was ill on the way home - coincidence????
I can see why they take the money for food up front - they would probably not get it otherwise.
If you want to inflict hunger, thirst and total misery for lots of hard earned money this is the place to visit - if not AVOID LIKE THE PLAGUE.
