Advantages: A great music pub with atmosphere to spare!
Disadvantages: Guiness belly !
A great music pub with atmosphere to spare! This is located at one end of Dominick Street, which is Galway’s main music street. There are a number of great music pubs here and Munroe’s Tavern is one of the better ones among a good group. The pub has a Sunday ‘lock-in’ like most Irish pubs these days. This means that between the hours of 12 noon and 2 p.m. the pub has to close. In practice the pubs simply lock its doors barring newcomers between these hours and locking-in the customers. Also, the bar is closed but in true Irish tradition you can buy a drink to have while you wait for the bar to re-open. During the Gaelic football and hurling season there is a large screen TV to watch the games on Sunday afternoons. The evening’s host many great bands that comprise touring as well as local musicians. These are groups that play all styles of music and not just traditional Irish music. There is a ‘session’ on Sunday afternoons where usually great local musicians play traditional music together although visitors are made welcome to join in the fun. And fun it is regardless the type of music that you usually play or like to listen to. This is a great pub that makes a point to welcome visitors and is a ‘must visit’ bar if you ever find yourself in this part of Ireland. You can check them out on their website at www.munroestavern.net. bigdoug tip =========== Don’t forget to check the other pubs in Dominick Street also, search out The Quays bar in Quay Street while you’re in Galway. If you spend a week in Galway, then people will acknowledge you in the street like old friends.
