      Very helpful

      Peculiar place, but good nonetheless

Ned's bar in Holywood is named after one of the former proprietors (of which there have only ever been three in the bar's history), Ned Carty who acquired the pub in 1967 and the pub is still owned by the Carty family. It is also known as the Maypole Bar, due to the big ships mast stuck in the ground in the middle of the road outside! This dates back to when a ship ran aground nearby and as a debt of gratitude to the people of Holywood who showed great generosity and chartiy to the survivors the maypole was given to the town as a gift.

Ned's is right smack bang in the middle of Holywood, on the High Street, beside the Maypole!

Ned's was first licensed in 1857 and would certainly be rightly described as having a certain 'je ne sais quoi'. I imagine that Ned's is not to everyones taste. For starters there is no music. This is because one of the 'rules' in Ned's is the art of conversation and music would only distract from the conversation.

Mobile phones are also banned, as again, they intrude into people trying to enjoy a nice pint.

And it is the nice pint that makes Ned's so worthwhile. Their Guinness is brilliant, a great pint, very creamy and tasy.

It is always busy at the weekend and the banter and craic are second to none. There is always good humour and laughs to be had and you could be sitting beside the local road sweeper to your left and one of Holywood's millionaires to your right, but everyone is treated the same way!

It is hard to explain just what makes Ned's so good and although that may seem like a cop out in a review it is difficult. Normally you would walk into a pub like this and quickly turn round and walk out. The walls and ceilings are still yellow from the days before the smoking ban and it is not the most elegant of pubs. But it definitely has that homely feel to it, that makes people keep coming back.

Word of warning - do not stack your glasses or put your feet on the tables - you will be barred! Another word of warning is probably not to linger too long in the toilets and I would not advise drying your hands on the towel in the gents- it looks like it has been there for years! But all part of the charm i suppose!

      Pints are about £3.00.
