Ned's bar in Holywood is named after one of the former proprietors (of which there have only ever been three in the bar's history), Ned Carty who acquired the pub in 1967 and the pub is still owned by the Carty family. It is also known as the Maypole Bar, due to the big ships mast stuck in the ground in the middle of the road outside! This dates back to when a ship ran aground nearby and as a debt of gratitude to the people of Holywood who showed great generosity and chartiy to the survivors the maypole was given to the town as a gift.
